Wolves fight Rangers for Lafferty

Kyle LaffertyWolves are slugging it out with Rangers for the services of Burnley’s Kyle Lafferty.

Molineux chief Mick McCarthy has already had one bid of £2.25m plus Stephen Elliott for the Northern Ireland international rejected and is now reported to be prepared to up the stakes by throwing Darren Potter into the equation as well.

His hand appears to have been forced by the Scottish giants, who are believed to have offered £2.5m plus Alan Gow in exchange for the Clarets striker.

But the Turf Moor club are thought to be demanding £4m. And McCarthy admits it has been hard going so far in the transfer market this summer.

“It’s like spinning plates at the moment for all of us,” McCarthy said.”How many deals have been done so far? Hardly any.

“You might see that so-and-so has signed but a lot of the time it’s just signing a new contract. That’s all that’s gone on.

“There’ll be a lot of people at the European Championships who are in the shop window and will be waiting to see what happens with their careers. Then it kind of starts filtering down through from there.

“And people aren’t prepared to pay wages through the summer which is understandable.

“We’ll have scouts at the Euros maybe having a look at one or two and we’ll watch on the telly but we’ve not got any specific targets there.

“I’ve not a figure in mind as to how many players I want. I’ve spoken to a couple of managers and they’ve got targets like us but are waiting to see if they can do any business. It’s always like that at this time of year, it’s difficult.”

Meanwhile, Wolves look set to have to battle out with Birmingham in the chase for Celtic defender Bobo Balde. McCarthy is on the lookout for a new centre-back after releasing Gary Breen.
