New AFC Telford United skipper Stuart Whitehead has spoken of his honour at being given the captain’s armband at the New Bucks Head.
Manager Rob Smith has turned to the former Carlisle, Darlington and Shrewsbury defender to take over the role from Jimmy Turner.
The experienced Whitehead has vowed to thrive on the extra responsibility. “It bring a bit more pressure but it’s nice to get the captaincy,” said the 31-year-old.
“You get the credit when things are going well but you are also the first person people turn to when things aren’t going so well.
“I thought Jimmy did a superb job last year on and off the pitch but the manager has decided to change things around.
“We are a bit more experienced this season so the manager has probably given it to somebody a bit older.
“I’ve had a chat with Jimmy and he understands the reasons. I’ve done it a few other clubs before so I’m looking forward to it.”
Whitehead, meanwhile, has declared himself fully recovered from the ankle ligament problem and hamstring strain which restricted his appearances during the closing weeks of last season.
“The ankle feels good and the hamstring’s fine so I’m all ready for pre-season.”
