Tesco cafe has low hygiene score

The cafe and staff canteen at Tesco’s flagship store in Telford has become the latest premises to receive one of the lower ratings in strict hygiene and safety inspection results now published online.

Telford & Wrekin Council’s “Scores on the Doors” rating system gave the restaurants at the chain’s Extra store on the Wrekin Retail Park just one star and labelled the “food hygiene and safety” and “structure and cleaning” as poor.

The new scheme sees the star ratings of pubs, restaurants, takeaways, private caterers, care homes and even school kitchens, that have been inspected by council environmental health inspectors since December 1 last year, published online.

The highest rating is five stars which is given to premises deemed to be ‘excellent’ while a zero rating goes to those with ‘very poor standards’.

The cafe and canteen is run by contractors Eurest on behalf of Tesco.

A spokesman for Eurest said: “Eurest takes health and safety very seriously indeed. An environmental health officer revisited the restaurant at Tesco Telford in April and said she was very happy with the improvements that had been made and that all outstanding issues had been resolved.”

But canteens at several others organisations are dishing up five star service to their staff.

Among those to score five stars were Dairy Crest at Crudington, the Epson canteen run by Avenance at its base in Hortonwood, and the staff canteen at pet charity PDSA in Priorslee.

PDSA Head of Property Services, Martin Cowell, who oversees the canteen, says: “PDSA is delighted, but not at all surprised, to get five stars for its food hygiene standards.

He said: “Rob Elliot and his team provide an excellent range of food to keep 170 staff happy and well-fed every day. Head office also hosts functions and training courses for PDSA staff from across the UK, all of which use the canteen. We’ve even catered for royalty when PDSA’s patron, HRH Princess Alexandra, visited.”

Tina Williams, from Epson, also paid tribute to the hard work of catering manager Sue Rigby and her team who scored the top rating.
