New striker Terry Fearns today insisted he welcomed the weight of expectation from the AFC Telford United fans, declaring: “I will deliver.”Fearns has joined from Droylsden and arrives with a reputation as the Blue Square North’s deadliest assassin.
He plundered a remarkable 41 goals for Southport in 2004-05 and followed that up with 27 for Droylsden in 2006-07 - both in title-winning seasons for those clubs.
And he backs himself to do something similar for the Bucks as they look to build on their second-place finish in the season just gone.
“I like a bit of pressure, so I hope all the fans can get behind me and I’ll deliver on the pitch,” said builder Fearns.
“I never set myself any targets, I prefer to take each game as it comes and let my feet do the talking.
“But I got 41 for Southport and 27 for Droylsden and we won the league on both occasions.
“I’ve always scored goals and I know I can do that for Telford. The manager has told me he wants to win the league, and I feel the same way.”
Fearns also remains hungry to prove himself at a higher level, having endured a difficult season in the Blue Square Premier with Droylsden.
The Bloods were relegated back to the northern division at the first time of asking, and the 30-year-old only managed to score eight goals in the process.
“I had a disappointing season last year but I want to put that behind me,” said Fearns, who is based in Liverpool and will travel to Shropshire with fellow new-boy Liam Blakeman.
“It didn’t go very well for us. We went into a higher league and didn’t bring the right players in, and there were a lot of problems there.
“I found myself on the bench a lot and I need to be playing regularly.
“Hopefully I can do that here and go up with Telford. I know I could score goals at that level with the right club.”
