Fire gutted Shrewsbury businesses

This dramatic photo of a fire in Shrewsbury in 1966, was loaned to us by Jason Manley, of Bayston Hill. This dramatic photo was loaned to us by Jason Manley, of Bayston Hill, who says: “It is a picture of a large fire that took place in Shrewsbury.

“It was taken by my father-in-law, Michael Jenkins of Wattlesborough Heath. I have no idea when or where it was.”

In fact we can help Jason on this point. It was on August 7, 1966, when one of Shrewsbury’s biggest fires caused £1 million-plus damage in Barker Street, it gutted the wool warehouse of John Smith and Sons (Shrewsbury) Ltd and the showrooms and store of ironmongers A.D. Foulkes.
