This photo was taken outside Severn House - later the Valley Hotel - in Ironbridge.

Some of those at the back look as if they may be maids.

The photo was loaned to us by Paul France, of Coalbrookdale, who guesses it was taken in the late Victorian or early Edwardian period.

“I do know that Severn House was the home of Thomas Parker until his death in 1915. He made at least two electric cars and is credited with inventing, among other things, the dynamo,” says Paul.

So is Thomas Parker himself on the photo? We dug out a portrait picture of Parker in our files but, comparing them, were evenly split in the office over whether the man on the far left might be him in his younger days.
