Shropshire student James Taylor has eclipsed a cricketing record held by England legend David Gower.
Shrewsbury School pupil Taylor hit 202 not out for Loughborough Town at Hinckley in the Everards Leicestershire Premier League on Saturday.
Stylish left-hander Gower held the highest previous score by any Loughborough Town batsman, while Taylor - who made his LV County Championship debut for Leicestershire last month - notched the first ever double hundred in the league’s history for the club at which he began his cricketing career as a nine-year-old.
Taylor came to the crease in the second ball of the innings with Loughborough at 0-1, and eventually put on 201 for the third wicket with Nemesh Patel.
His sublime innings came off just 174 balls - the last 50 was off just 21 deliveries - and included 26 fours and three sixes.
It continued a sublime run of form for the England under-19 batsman, who made an astonishing 156 not out for Shrewsbury School in a Twenty20 match against Culfold, a touring side from Suffolk, just 24 hours earlier.
Taylor was also instrumental in guiding Shrewsbury into the last 16 of the Independent Schools National 20s with three excellent performances with the bat in as many group qualifying matches last week.
