Savvy Simpson showing patience

Paul SimpsonPaul Simpson has admitted patience will be a virtue in his attempts to add further reinforcements to his Shrewsbury Town squad.

Simpson has already delved into the transfer market to swoop for experienced midfielder Paul Murray and rookie winger Stephen Hindmarch.

But the Town boss insists he will not panic in the search to strengthen his squad - and is prepared to bide his time.

“The talking (with players and agents) goes on,” he said. “There are still a lot of clubs who have not done their full retained list so it’s going to keep going on for a short while yet.

“I’m not getting too frustrated because this is what I expected to happen and I’m prepared to wait.

“If I’m being honest I’m surprised to get a couple of players in already.

“I knew that Paul Murray was the right type for us and I just felt that Stephen Hindmarch was a gamble worth taking.

“They are two good signings for us and it’s just a case of keep working towards others now.”

Town’s squad now stands at 23, but Simpson insists there is still room for new faces - regardless of if and when members of his current squad move on.

“Andy Cooke, Colin Murdock, Jimmy Ryan and Luke Jones have been released and we haven’t extended the deals for Michael Barnes and Martin Riley,” he added.

“Graeme Lee has gone back (to Doncaster after a loan) so there is room to bring players in.

“I have had phone calls from different managers asking about a few of our players - but that is just normal practice.

“We have had no firm offers put in for players so we will just have to see how that unfolds as we go along.”

SImpson, meanwhile, has played down speculation linking him with a new goalkeeper.

Sources in Crewe had suggested a move for either highly-rated Owain Fon Williams or Ben Williams was in the offing.

But Simpson said: “I don’t want to get into a situation where I’m commenting on every rumour but I don’t know where that one has come from.

“We have two senior goalkeepers in Scott Bevan and Glyn Garner at this moment in time.

“A goalkeeper is not a position I’m looking to bring someone in.”
