Wolves pulled off a major coup today by signing Bournemouth’s much coveted striker Sam Vokes.
The 18-year-old has signed a four-year contract and is boss Mick McCarthy’s first summer signing. No fee has been disclosed.
Vokes, who turned down a £200,000 move to Crewe in January, had been expected to sign for Newcastle, while Villa were also interested in the Dorset-born forward.
McCarthy watched the brilliant Welsh under-21 international with owner-chairman Steve Morgan and coach Terry Connor in last week’s international against England at Wrexham.
Vokes has scored 16 goals in 38 starts, plus a further 16 as substitute for the cash-strapped Cherries, including 12 strikes last season.
He scored four goals in the 2006-07 season after making his debut in December 2006.
