Headteachers from Powys are to lobby Welsh Assembly members amid fears of a lack of funding for a new educational system.
Top teachers from the Welshpool area met yesterday to discuss their fears about the new Foundation Phase Curriculum, which is due to be introduced for nursery and reception-age children in September.
They now plan to write to Montgomeryshire AM Mick Bates, who is currently in hospital recovering from a hip operation, to outline their concerns.
Gungrog Infants School headteacher Margaret Evitts said: “Headteachers are so concerned they will not have sufficient funding to successfully introduce the curriculum for nursery and reception children in September 2008, they have been lobbying Assembly Members in Cardiff.
“In Montgomeryshire, due to our Assembly Member being in hospital, action was taken at a local level.”
She said the Welshpool Headteacher Cluster Group gathered for a breakfast meeting at Gungrog School.
“The schools represented were between £9,000 and £16,000 short, for this financial year, in their budget allocation to allow the correct staffing ratios of one trained adult to eight children to be introduced,” she added.
