Face of lad makes picture interesting

Astley Abbotts School, near Bridgnorth - 1885The handwritten date on the back of this picture showing children at Astley Abbotts School, near Bridgnorth, is 1885, and written on the board being held up is “Astley Abbots Group 1″.

It is interesting to note that the teachers of the day would surely have been insistent this was spelt correctly, whereas today Ordnance Survey maps spell the name of the village with two ts.

This picture was loaned to us by Ian Lucas of Telford Golf & Spa Hotel and comes from Mrs Elizabeth Stanley, the housekeeping manager, who bought it among various items at an auction in Bridgnorth.

“I love the face of that little lad at the left of the front row. What a face! He looks as though he is saying ‘I’m going home at 4pm and I’m going to get a good hiding,’” said Ian.
