Roads plan still delayed

The saga of Bridgnorth’s long-awaited relief road was continuing to rumble today after it was revealed there was still no definite start date for work.Despite assurances work would begin this month, a start date has still to be fixed.

The work will be carried out on behalf of Sainsbury’s by an as yet unnamed contractor, but the supermarket has stated it cannot start until a few final details are sorted out.

A Sainsbury’s spokesman said: “Unfortunately, we still do not have a start date as we are still waiting to finalise details with Bridgnorth District Council.”

Council leader Councillor Elizabeth Yeomans described the wait as “very frustrating”.

“It has been an exceedingly long process and I’m very anxious to see the whole thing come to fruition and for improvements to be brought about in Whitburn Street, as well as seeing the relief road,” she said.

“We want to see things brought to a conclusion as soon as possible, so we can get the work done for the benefit of everyone.”

The Whitburn Street relief road is part of the supermarket chain’s development plan of the Smithfield area of town. The store plans to extend its existing site and build a DIY warehouse and garden centre.

It is hoped the relief road will ease congestion along Whitburn Street by taking motorists away from the town centre and bringing them out on the Broseley road on the other side of Northgate. It had previously been reported the 20-week project should be complete by October.

The need for a relief road was initially recognised by councillors about 20 years ago and council members approved the final plans for the scheme in January.
