Shropshire boxer Brendan Howes has British glory in his sights when he steps into the ring tomorrow for the quarter-finals of the National Junior Championships.
The Shrewsbury & Severnside ABC star heads to Wakefield to meet Yorkshire’s Matthew Neilson in what promises to be a close contest in the 75-80kgs division.
Mount Pleasant lad Howes has pedigree, having reached the semi-finals last season, but knows he will be up against it tomorrow with his opponent having beaten him on their previous two meetings.
Neilson, of the Tom Lowe Club in Doncaster, took a controversial points decision when the two met in the Yorkshire lad’s back yard.
It required a majority points decision to separate them in a re-match at Shrewsbury’s Lord Hill Hotel.
Trainer Colin Hough said: “He’s trained hard and he’s quite capable of beating this lad, and it’s just how it goes on the day now.
“He’s lost to him twice before, but if that doesn’t fire him up to go out and get revenge this time, then I don’t know what will.”
Telford ABC duo Tom Fletcher and Joe Streeter have both received byes through to the last four in the country in the 52-54kgs and 46-48 categories respectively.
They will now be in action in the semi-finals on Saturday week.
