Montgomeryshire MP Lembit Opik, who recovered from severe injuries after a paragliding accident in Mid Wales, has helped launch a website giving support to people with spinal injuries.
The Liberal Democrat joined other celebrities yesterday launching the Spinal Research Group’s website. Among those featured on MySpine.org are jump jockey Richard Dunwoody and the adventurer Bear Grylls.
Every year, more than 800 people in the UK and Ireland are paralysed following an injury to their spinal cord.
According to recent research, 77 per cent felt it would have been useful to talk to someone in a similar situation and 66 per cent said it had brought them closer to others who have suffered a similar experience.
Mr Opik, who broke 12 vertebrae and ribs in an accident paragliding near Llanidloes in 1998, said: “I have high hopes for this website as being an inspiration for those suffering from a spinal injury.”

Great idea, I’m sure Myspine will be a great addition to other organisations such as the Spinal Injuries Association and Apparelyzed, which also support those paralysed. It’s great to see some high profile faces supporting spinal injuries causes as well.
