Frank packs punch at trade show

Frank BrunoOne of Britain’s best loved sporting heroes Frank Bruno kept the crowds entertained as he made an appearance at a Shropshire trade show.

The former WBC World Heavyweight Champion was invited to the event at the Telford International Centre by town tool manufacturer, Makita. He was given a round of applause by traders and their customers at the event as he walked through the door yesterday afternoon.

And he spent more than an hour meeting people and signing photographs.

Big Frank later attended a dinner laid on at the international centre by the event organisers - the National Merchants Buying Society (NMBS).

He was surrounded by fans eager to speak to the sporting star and shake his hand.

Spokesman for the Hortonwood-based Makita, Stuart McCrudden, said: “Two years ago we had Gordon Banks, the former England goalkeeper. Lots of guys in this sort of industry are interested in sports, if not sporty.

“It’s nice to have a sports personality to come along.”

He said Bruno had also signed some Makita tools to be used to raise money for the Rainy Day Trust, which provides days out for handicapped and other children.

The trust is the NMBS’ charity and Makita is also helping with the fundraising.

Mr McCrudden said: “I have met him at a couple of sporting dinners. He is a comedy personality, very relaxed and happy. He looks pretty fit and slim.”

He added: “He is a very popular, nice guy. He has never been afraid to speak his mind.”

Bruno, who was awarded the MBE, has since made a name for himself in pantomime and public appearances.

Yesterday he also helped with Makita’s Drop Dead Battery campaign by putting a battery in a recycling bin. The campaign is to be launched next month during National Recycling Week.
