A Shropshire motorcycle expert - who championed the Bikesafe initiative - has successfully challenged North Wales Police over claims he rode at 80mph.
Bob McMillan, former general manager of Honda UK Motorcycles and an ex-police advanced motorcycle instructor, was incensed when pulled up with two friends on the Trawsfynydd to Bala road to be told he and two friends had been speeding.
The 60-year-old, of Treflach, near Oswestry, has spent a year fighting the summons and, after winning the right to see alleged video evidence from a police helicopter, has now been told his case has been dropped.
He has reported his case to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.”This is not an anti-police rant, having spent 10 years as a police traffic officer and being proud of that time,” he said. Over Easter Bank Holiday 2007 Mr McMillan was stopped by police near Bala and told he had been captured on camera by a Vascar operator in a police helicopter.
He and his wife have dedicated themselves to proving the allegation false. “We have spent hundreds and hundreds of hours and hundreds of po- unds to prove this. It was not the £60 fine or three points on the licence but the principle” he said.
The couple used new laws to view evidence from video footage which they say showed the camera was pointed at another motorcyclist.
A police spokeswoman today said: “North Wales Police in consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service have decided to discontinue speeding offence cases.” She said the decision was “based purely on administrative matters”
