College wins Ofsted praise

Shrewsbury’s Sixth Form College has been awarded “good” grades in its latest Ofsted report and praised for providing a culture where students come first.

The town centre college, which could move to London Road if plans to co-locate with Shrewsbury College of Art and Technology are approved, is described by inspectors as “enjoyable, busy and industrious.”

The report states: “Achievement and standards are good and students make good progress compared to their prior attainment.”

The college is praised for its curriculum, which meets a “wide range of needs” and its guidance and support for students is described as “outstanding.”

But the accommodation is labelled “satisfactory,” and the report states much of it is “dated and tired” and “social facilities are cramped and insufficient”.

The college is marked out for its “effective use of the student voice” but told to improve attendance and punctuality and criticised for “insufficient rigour in self-assessment and in the lesson observation process” as well as “shortcomings in the curriculum for key skills and personal, social and health education”.

The report, published on Friday, says extra-curricular activities are “extensive”.

It states: “Sport, both competitive and recreational, is very well established with a higher participation rate.

“Drama and music productions are frequent and involve a high number of students from across the college.”

The report states governors and senior managers have spent much time on the £60 million co-location project. It says: “This controversial project has received much opposition from staff, students and parents and has led to reduced confidence by staff in governors.”

Robert Bland, chairman of governors, said: “I am delighted the quality of teaching and learning has been recognised.

“Particularly pleasing is that the inspectors noted the outstanding support for individual students throughout the college.”
