The first artist’s impression of a £30 million project to transform Shrewsbury’s historic Flax Mill is revealed today.
Urban Splash, the company appointed to develop the 18th century mill, is currently working on designs.
It hopes to exhibit more artist’s impressions later this year.
The development will include 200 homes, offices and shops.
County councillor Alan Mosley, a member of the steering group for the Flax Mill, said he was very impressed with the development, but said there was a significant need for funding.
Mr Mosley showed residents the artist’s impression at a meeting in Castlefields on Thursday.
“The residents were delighted to see the plans. It will improve the area significantly and provide employment and have a big impact on the area,” he said. “Clearly this is not a normal development. There’s a big gap in funding at the moment because of the cost of conservation.
“All the funding is not yet stacked up but it’s early days. Obviously the developers Urban Splash and the council and other agencies are investigating funding.”
Ian Kilby, Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council planning services manager, said a public inquiry was still due to take place in June to discuss the council’s acquisition of the Arriva bus depot which fronts the site.
Nobody from Urban Splash was available for comment.
