Scheme for high street is backed

A £400,000 scheme to refurbish Cleobury Mortimer’s High Street has been given the go ahead and work will start this summer.

Workmen will be arriving in the town on August 11 and work is set to be complete by Christmas.

The Cleobury Mortimer enhancement programme includes new footway paving and a crossing which, after extensive consultation, it was agreed to be placed outside Brown’s Bakery Corner.

There will also be grants available for businesses to refurbish shop fronts.

The idea for the scheme was raised more than a year ago, but met with a mixed reaction from people and businesses in Cleobury Mortimer.

The scheme also includes improving parking arrangements and it is now out to contractors.

The facilities will also provide a safer place for school children to cross and a 20mph zone for the centre of the town.

The project is being funded by Advantage Wets Midlands and Shropshire County Council.

Today Councillor Adrian Coles, who represents Cleobury Mortimer on Shropshire County Council, said: “Work is scheduled to be complete by mid November.

“It has been going on for consultation for a couple of years now. A decision was made at the end of last week.

“The scheme is going ahead and it will be a wonderful improvement for the high street of Cleobury Mortimer.”
