Ponies case teen remanded in care

A teenager accused of killing two ponies in a Shropshire field was today remanded into local authority care.

The 14-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, faces two charges of killing the Shetland ponies in a paddock off Edgeley Road, Whitchurch, on Sunday with a 17-year-old.

They are also accused of carrying an action rifle with intent to commit criminal damage and unlawfully carrying the gun with ammunition in a public place.

The 14-year-old is also charged with illegally entering a property in Whitchurch and stealing the rifle.

He had been remanded into local authority care at his first hearing on Tuesday, and that was extended until June 6 at today’s hearing at Shrewsbury Magistrates Court.

The case is also due to be heard at the court on June 20, when it is expected to be committed to crown court.

Members of the community were shocked to hear of the death of the ponies, known as Bill and Ben.

They had lived as pets in a paddock in the town owned by Edgeley House Nursing and Residential Home for about 14 years and were popular with residents of the home and the local community.

A spokesman for the home said: “Everyone at the home is shocked and upset at the death of two beloved pets.

“We are fully co-operating with the police in their inquiries.”
