Managing director Rob Bickerton today pledged the “absolute support” of Shrewsbury Town’s Board of directors to Paul Simpson’s attempts to strengthen his squad. The Town manager is keen to add reinforcements to his ranks after last season’s 18th place finish in League Two, which fell well below expectations.
Despite a substantial outlay by Gary Peters on the signings of Kevin McIntyre, Guy Madjo, James Constable and Scott Bevan, Bickerton insisted new boss Simpson will be backed in his attempted dealings in the transfer market through the close season.
“We are working hard on budgets and making sure the club is as financially ship-shape as possible,” said Bickerton, who confirmed the possibility of an overseas pre-season training camp was under consideration.
“Everything we do here is done with the intention of trying to support the manager and, as a Board of directors, you have to give your absolute support.
“We have let some players go and that has created some spaces in the squad.
“There are still a lot of players under contract and Paul is working in a tighter range than maybe he would like to have been.
“That’s not being disrespectful to to the current players here - it’s just a recognition of a new manager always having his way of doing things.”
Bickerton also offered a glowing endorsement for the club’s supporters since he arrived at the club in early January.
“I haven’t missed a game in that time and the support has been incredible,” said Bickerton.
“The amount of fans we had at Rochdale on the final day was unbelievable and the home support has been fantastic, because you can’t get away from the fact we have only won two home games in this calender year.”
As well as the possibility of a pre-season training camp, Simpson is also hoping to pencil in a final friendly on Saturday, August 2, a week before the League Two season gets under way.

when they get the lights on emstrey island it will be possible to build a training complex on there and still be within budget
