Three youths hurled abuse at a cyclist in Telford before hitting him with a glass bottle, causing a gash to his head.
Then, while attending hospital for a check-up, his bike was stolen - along with a bag that was tied to it containing personal belongings.
The 33-year-old had been cycling along the Silkin Way on Tuesday, between Oakengates town centre and Ketley Bank, when the youths started shouting and swearing at him.
When he stopped to speak to them, between 2.30pm and 3pm, he was attacked with the bottle.
The cyclist fled the scene and chained his bike to a nearby lamppost before attending Telford’s Princess Royal Hospital with a friend for a check-up.
But on returning to pick the bike up, he discovered it had been stolen. A bag that was attached to it, containing a savings book and ID card, was also taken.
Chris Ammonds, Telford police spokesman, said: “The victim, who is eastern European, has so far been unable to give a detailed description of the youths that shouted at him but he has stated that he believes they were aged between 12 and 19.
“It is unknown whether the same youths were connected to the theft of his bag and bicycle.”
