Residents’ anger over homes plan

People in Donnington have joined parish councillors in condemning plans for 55 homes off St Matthew’s Road.

It comes after they packed two public meetings on the plan, held yesterday and on May 1. The meeting heard objections from schools, churches and residents over fears the scheme would cause congestion.

Lilleshall and Donnington Parish Council clerk Ralph Morgan said: “We’ve got photos we’ve submitted to Telford & Wrekin Council that show how bad the parking is when there’s a funeral or a wedding at the church. During school pick-up times it’s absolutely chaotic.

“The feeling against this application is very strong. There’s no community thought going into it.”

The parish council has already vowed to oppose the plans from Mayfield Development LLP when they go before the borough council, the planning authority.

The site is currently used for parking.

Objector Nev Hoggins, of St Matthew’s Road, said: “It’s an overdevelopment of a very small site and will take away a key car park while increasing traffic.

“We’re not against the development full stop but the plans need tweaking.”

Objectors said the loss of parking for the nearby Lifelong Learning Centre could lead to its demise and they felt there was poor access for emergency services.

Campaigners were also concerned about children’s safety as many parents parked on the land when going to the nursery and school. They fear the volume of traffic would soar if the homes were built.
