Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey insists the club won’t be sacking the manager - despite fans blaming Mick McCarthy for the failure to make the play-offs.
McCarthy has been the scapegoat among fans as Wolves finished on five points fewer than last season’s play-off semi-finalists despite heavy investment in the team.
Owner-chairman Steve Morgan has already said McCarthy’s future is safe this summer, convinced ’something special’ is being created with the youthful team being assembled.
“I think Mick has done a great job,” said Moxey. “I can’t see any reason why he wouldn’t be here (next season).
“The club has historically got rid of managers too quickly and that word patience, both inside the boardroom and on the terraces, is really important.
“Because if we’re going to try to build something, it takes time.
“We’re building something we think is quite special and I’m surprised at the sea change from ‘Super Mick’ to something less complimentary!
“That’s football, but sometimes we have to say ‘we know what we’re doing, we’ve got a plan, we’re sticking to it and hopefully the fans can stick with us.
“By and large, they have done.”
Moxey believes injuries - and in particular to Michael Kightly - hit Wolves’ hopes hard.
“We finished seventh. We would all liked to have been promoted automatically, but we haven’t,” he said.
“There are many reasons for that.
“Losing Michael Kighly for 27 League games when all our fans can see the really positive impact he makes, has been a loss some people have overlooked.
“Had he been available and not got injured in November, who knows where we may be right now?
“It’s important not to use injuries as an excuse and it would be wrong to highlight one player.
“We’ve had lots of injuries - Matt Jarvis, full-backs, centre-backs, central midfielders and strikers.”
