Yesterday’s rainy weather failed to dampen the spirits of hundreds of steam enthusiasts who gathered to see Telford Steam Railway’s flagship locomotive brought back into use for the first time in almost 20 years.

The ex-GWR 0-6-2 tank locomotive number 5619, of 1925, returned to Horsehay after undergoing a £150,000 restoration.

Dave Angell, spokesman for Telford Steam Railway, said: “Previously we’ve had a visiting locomotive but this year we had our own steam engine and we were running passenger rides. It will go out for hire now, but hopefully we will have it back with us next year.”

Other attractions included a narrow gauge steam tram, originally built almost 30 years ago for use in Telford Town Park.

Meanwhile, people travelled from far and wide to visit the 18th British Falconry & Raptor Fair, held at Chetwynd Park near Newport.

Organisers say about 20,000 people attended over two days.

Cheryl Morris, organiser, said: “Chetwynd Park is a beautiful setting for the event, and we had people come from all over, including America, Spain and Brazil.”

A variety of other big events took place across the area, enticing visitors to the county for everything from festivals to May fairs.

Among the star attractions was Libby, the baby American barn owl, who was turning heads as she was put on display for the first time at Gentleshaw Wildlife Centre, in Eccleshall, yesterday.

Visitors were invited to take part in the centre’s 15th birthday celebrations and six-week-old Libby helped out as part of a programme to help educate people about owls and their conservation.

Activities included chances to meet some of the friendlier residents up close, a flying display, quizzes, and games.

People could join in a variety of events, including walks with the warden and watching birds of prey, at one of north Shropshire’s most popular beauty spots.

In south Shropshire, bumper events such as the Ludlow May Fair and Clun Green Man Festival brought smiles to the faces of local residents.

Ludlow Town Centre was packed yesterday with people of all ages enjoying fairground rides in Castle Square.

In Clun, bumper crowds gathered to see the village’s Green Man duel with the Ice Queen.

The event signifies the end of the cold winter weather and the onset of warmer summer weather.

And hundreds of Meccano fans turned out at Enginuity in Coalbrookdale for Telford and Ironbridge Meccano Society’s show called Meccanuity.

A giant model of the Iron Bridge was part of the three day event.

In Church Aston villagers enjoyed the 25th anniversary of the May fair, which included a car boot sale and a host of stalls as well as Charlotte Brown being crowned may queen.

One of the county’s biggest events, the Falconry and Raptor Fair at Chetwynd Park, near Newport, was hailed a success with visitors from around the world.

In Norbury, canal boat fans enjoyed the Norbury Junction Canal Festival, where the canalside was turned into a sea of colour, music and dancing.

The car park at Telford Steam Railway in Horsehay was overflowing as hundreds of visitors turned out to see the former Great Western Railway tank locomotive number 5619, arriving back in the village for the first time in 20 years.

And the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway ran trips between Welshpool and Llanfair Caereinion over the bank holiday weekend.
