Tributes to police crash man

The bypass was closed after the fatal accidentTributes have been paid to a Shropshire man who died after being involved in a collision with a police van in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The man, who has been named by friends as Ken Furber, who was in his late 20s, of Station Road, Whitchurch, was killed in the incident on the A41 Whitchurch bypass just before 3am on Saturday.

He was believed to have been walking with a woman when the collision happened near the Tilstock roundabout.

Mr Furber had only started his new job at Fastrack Maintenance Ltd, based in Oswestry, a month ago, but had already made a big impression on people.

His boss, Gary Jones, managing director of the company, today said Mr Furber, affectionately known by his colleagues and friends as Kenny, had been enjoying working on the contract to look after the ornamental gardens at schools in the area.

Mr Jones said: “Kenny hadn’t been with us long but the one thing that came over loud and clear in that short time was that he was an exceptionally hard worker.

“Kenny was very well appreciated at the local schools where he maintained the ornamental gardens. He was such a hard working, nice lad.

“We only remarked this week how fortunate we were to have him.”

The incident has been reported to the Indpendent Police Complaints Commission, and the coroner for Mid and North Shropshire, Mr John Ellery, has been informed. A post mortem examination will be held.

Police are appealing for witnesses to contact Whitchurch police station on 08457 444888.
