Ecstatic young goalkeeper Jasbir Singh has vowed to grasp his chance as a professional after securing his future at Shrewsbury Town.Singh was given a one-year contract by manager Paul Simpson earlier this week, following in the footsteps of shining lights Joe Hart, Dave Edwards and Steve Leslie in graduating from the club’s youth programme at Walford College into the first team squad.
Now Singh is determined to grab his chance and push his career to the next level next season.
“The manager had me in on Tuesday and told me I had got a contract and I was over the moon,” he said.
“You always hope you are going to get a contract and I’m confident in my own ability.
“I’ve been training regularly with the first team over the last couple of months, which has been fantastic, and you just try to impress.
“I just have to keep learning now and keep trying to improve.
Touches
“The manager told me my aim for next season is to push on and try and challenge for the reserve team position. My objectives are the same and we will see what happens from there.”
The contract puts the finishing touches on a memorable season for Edgbaston-based Singh, who turned 18 in March and played a starring role in Town’s memorable 1-0 FA Youth Cup third round victory over Newcastle.
And Head of Youth Nigel Vaughan is delighted to see the custodian rewarded with a professional deal.
“It’s absolutely superb news for us and it’s great to get a player through into the first-team squad,” said Vaughan.
“Jas has done well all season. He was outstanding at Newcastle and was probably the reason we won up there.
“He has learned from working with the senior first-team goalkeepers and coaches. He has a long way to go, but he has got the attributes to do well and a great attitude.”
