
Oswestry-born golfer Ian Woosnam, pictured here with cricketer Ian Botham, kicked off his golfing career at Llanymynech Golf Club near his family’s home in St Martins. Woosnam turned pro in 1976 and went on to win the 1982 Swiss Open and the 1991 US Masters, spending almost a year at the top of the Official World Golf Rankings. He was awarded an OBE last year.

have we had sir gordon richards jockey born in the telford area, also matthew webb who swam the english channel, born in a similar area of the county,
matthew webb is already listed in number 2.
there’s also david preece the footballer? think he might’ve been from bridgnorth but could be wrong…

David preece was from Bridgnorth. Superb footballer and great bloke. He very sadly passed away a little while back. RIP.
