Shrewsbury’s roads are continuing to create problems for motorists driving through the county town during the current “pedestrian trial”, with conflicting instructions causing confusion.
Traffic directions have been changed on a number of routes, including the road from Castle Gates through Dogpole. But this sign, caught on camera by Shropshire Star reader Sam Reese, shows why some drivers may not be getting to grips with the system.
Mr Reese, 20, of Monkmoor, spotted the sign on the road as he drove through the town centre on Saturday.
He said: “It think it is pretty laughable that they can leave it like that. I noticed it while I was in the car and went back on foot to take a picture.
“There are quite a few things that I have noticed around the town that are confusing, like one-way signs which contradict other signs.
“I dread to think what it is like for people visiting Shrewsbury.
“I usually go through town a couple of times a week but not at the moment.”Phil Crossland, assistant director of transport and highways at Shropshire County Council, said contractors had been contacted about the problem.
He said: “The situation is the turn left is the original road marking but obviously as part of the diversion people are now meant to turn right.
“The turn left should have been blacked out so we have instructed the contractors to go out there as a matter of urgency.
“With over 200 changes to the road signage some things can be missed.”
Dogpole is closed until the end of May while essential work takes place as part of the third phase of the town centre enhancement scheme.
It means St Mary’s Street and Castle Street are also closed to through traffic.
The closure is to improve pavements as the county council trials the town centre as a more pedestrian-friendly area by reducing traffic while the work takes place.

The council should be prosecuted for such a sign as they would not hesitate to prosecute a driver who ignored any signs, but I suppose they will again get away with it again
