McMahon wants to keep Town job

Assistant manager John McMahon today expressed his burning desire to remain a part of Paul Simpson’s long-term vision for Shrewsbury Town.

The future of Town’s backroom coaching staff has been a talking point amongst supporters since the arrival of Simpson at the start of March.

The Shrewsbury boss has - so far at least - not brought in his own behind-the-scenes team, with McMahon and first-team coach Stuart Delaney continuing in the positions they held under manager Gary Peters.

And McMahon - who is nearing his two-year anniversary with the Oteley Road club - is hopeful the status quo will continue.

“As far as I’m concerned, when the manager came in he said let’s just keep things going,” said the brother of former England and Liverpool midfielder Steve, who had a brief spell as caretaker manager after the departure of Peters.”That’s the way it has continued and until I’m told differently, I’m looking forward to being involved with a positive future at the club.

“For me it’s a really well run and well organised club that has got everything going for it.

“We have had a really disappointing season. I’m surprised and disappointed at the way it has turned out and, as players and staff, we have to take responsibility for that because we have under-performed.

“But we are ready to get together, look at where we have gone wrong and look forward to next season with renewed enthusiasm.”

McMahon admitted he has been impressed with what he has seen from former Carlisle and Preston chief Simpson in his opening two months at the Town helm.

“He is very good,” added the No 2. “He has obviously got experience - he’s played at the highest level and managed at a high level as well and he is very bright and lively.

“You can already see where he is going with the club and I think it looks very positive.”
