A closure-threatened Post Office in south Shropshire ought to stay open because it is run by local residents and is cost-effective, according to Ludlow Conservative MP Philip Dunne.
Lydbury North Post Office is on a hitlist drawn up as part of a nationwide plan to save millions of pounds.
But Mr Dunne said it ought to stay open.
His campaign has been backed by local councillors Nigel Hartin, Jackie Williams and Georgie Ellis.
Mr Dunne said local people had already met and had voted unanimously in favour of a post office at the village shop.
He said the shop was run by volunteers from the community, which meant it was cost-effective.
“Lydbury North is in a unique position to be able to maintain a post office presence in its village shop, since this is already run by local people who volunteer their time,” he said.Mr Dunne said locals would be able to meet representatives from Post Office at a public meeting next month to raise their points about why the branch should be saved.
He said: “The Post Office manager who will make decisions about closure will be attending a public meeting in Lydbury North Village Hall on May 9, at 3pm.
“This will provide the community with the chance to explain directly to Post Office management why it makes economic sense for Post Office to keep some post office facility in the village.”
Twenty-eight post office branches and mobile services across Shropshire face the axe - 14 are in south Shropshire.
