Alert after metal thefts from schools

Thieves stole metal from the roof of a school in Ludlow and lead from the roof of a school in Telford.

Police have today issued an appeal for information.

In separate developments, officers made arrests in Ellesmere and Oswestry as part of a crackdown on metal thefts.

West Mercia Police spokeswoman Rachel Anstee said: “Lead was stolen from the roof of Redhill Primary School, Priorslee, Telford, on Thursday, while Ludlow Infants School in Sandpits Road, was targeted for its metal roofing on Friday or Saturday.

“Thieves previously stole metal from the school roof in February this year.

“Police would like the public’s help to make more arrests and recover more metal.”

She said a 36-year-old man was arrested on Sunday night on suspicion of theft after police made a stop check on a vehicle loaded with metal. Officers arrested the man in Willow Street, Ellesmere, shortly after 11pm and he was released on police bail.

The arrest is the latest for Project Livewire, West Mercia Constabulary’s initiative to tackle metal theft.

About 90 arrests have been made since the campaign was launched last summer.

Another man was arrested on Thursday in Upper Brook Street, Oswestry, after police received a report of people on the roof of an address.

A substantial amount of lead was recovered nearby. A 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of theft and later released on police bail.

Anyone with information about any of the incidents is asked to call police on 08457 444888.
