The countdown to the season continues after another disappointing performance from the Town in the 0-0 draw with Chester, writes Shrewsbury Town blogger James Pugh.
Any hopes of ending the season at home in style didn’t come off and there were very few positives to take from the game.
One noticeable positive was the performance of Chris Humphrey.
He has received a lot of criticism from fans, including myself during the season, but bear in mind a lot of his performances were after coming off the bench.
What has been disappointing is that he hasn’t been given a fair run of starting games which is the best and fairest way of judging him.
The poor game was fitting of the fact that it was are last home game of the season as fans have become used to leaving the new ground disappointed.
Our first season there has not been as we had hoped, but hopefully after getting used to the new surroundings both players and fans will come back next year refreshed and raring to go.
I have got to praise Simpson’s honesty since he has been at the club.
He has been correct in saying we are not good enough and changes need to be made in the summer.
I was also particularly impressed with the way he came across after speaking to fans last week at the new ground.
I have every faith in him and am sure he is the man to turn things around. Watch this space!
I know there is not much competition for player of the season, but who would fans give it to?
For me it is Tierney. He has been our most consistent player and always give 100% and applaud the fans’ support at the end of every game.
Other noticeable performers this season have been from Langmead and Herd.
I was glad to here news of season ticket prices being frozen for next season.
I don’t think there was much chance of them going up following the season we have had and there might have been a bit of a backlash from fans.

With any luck there won’t be many of the players from this shambles coming back next year.
So far I think Town fans have mixed feelings about Simpson.
The major plus point is that he has kept us in the league and he’s also been very open with the fans and spent time talking to them. But we’ve not seen much in his first 9 games in charge to suggest he has any great tactical or motivational ability, and the three signings he made have had little impact.
The defeats at Chesterfield and Mansfield were very poor, and that can’t all be down to the players. We all know he inherited a side with problems but there are only 4-5 players out of contract in the summer so he’ll have to work with most of the squad again next year and try to get much more out of them whilst bringing in some new, experienced players.
Hopefully he’ll do well though, as he seems to be a likeable, hard working manager.
there have been signs of a success story this season but alas not in the first team squad. i refer to our youth squad, i recall they went a long way in their cup only losing to chelsea and taking a few notable scalps on the way, well done to this squad and those in charge. i do hope paul simpsson looks to both home grown talent as well as some useful imports.
as for last saturday, bevan kept another clean sheet in goal, and the manager experimented to a limited degree with subs. i think he should go into the rochdale game with more experiments, and if we were to get a result at rochdale that would be the icing on a bun, nay bum season. we go onto next august with hope and determination, but we forget our youth at our peril. on with the clear out paul!
Devon Salopian, from a distance you seem to have a lot of opinions on the players here at the moment.Having watched the youth team, personally I would keep maybe the goalkeeper, and thats about it. They beat Newcastle, they were only league team they beat in the cup. That was mainly down to a superb performance from the keepre. As for the first team who would you keep and who would you let go ? Just so we know, are you a fan of the new manager or not ?
i think the reason we stayed up is more to do with gary peters’ good start to the season than paul simpsons poor finish.
bevan, tierney, langmead, davies, macintyre, humphrey, herd, leslie, pugh, and constable can stay, the rest can go to wrexham…
Devon Salopian how much is the trainfare from Exeter to Shrews?
i agree with spencer about gary peters start to the season.and the players to be retained. in my view the 2 critical games that kept us up were the 2 draws against top opposition when macca was acting manager. this led me to think morale and confidence had returned to the squad and i was happy to be one of the 3% who wanted macca appointed until the end of the season.
no i was not an immediate fan of paul simpsons management skills. his going public about the team being pathetic was beneath the belt and should have been said behind closed doors.now that a new season is only 15 weeks away we support our new man, wish him well with his clearout and imports and see what impact has been made by say 15.10.08.
fonz about £48, but when i come up i drive.
sorry every one if my opinions are not wanted from devon but i will give you one more thought, i believe the new town badge was an unlucky omen. to leave the words out floreat salopia, let shrewsbury flourish, was crass stupidity in the extreme, and i hope it is changed pronto
with port vale being relegated i don’t think there will ever be a better time to bring luke rodgers back to the club.
Think about it paul, it will make you more popular with the fans and it might sell a few season tickets…
How the hell did the Team start so well and then plummet so quickly?????
