A man in his 60s has died after being startled by bulls in a Shropshire field.
The man, who has not been named, was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident near Shrewsbury yesterday, despite efforts by passers-by to save him.
Ambulance crews were called to a field near the Dog In The Lane pub in Astley shortly before 5pm after reports that the man had been hit by a bull. Armed police were also called to the scene to help the crews.
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said members of the public were trying to revive the man when the ambulance crews arrived.
He said: “On arrival crews found a man lying in a field. There were also several of the public; some of whom were helping in giving CPR.
“The crews were told the man had been hit by a bull.
“Despite the best efforts of the public and those of the ambulance crews, nothing could be done to save him and he was confirmed dead at the scene.”
Police said they were investigating the cause of the tragedy and were looking at a number of possibilities, including that the man could have been startled by the bull.
Inspector Sarah Wagstaff of West Mercia Police, said: “The initial report was received by police at 5.07pm yesterday from ambulance after a man had been attacked by a bull in a field near Astley.
“When armed officers attended to assist ambulance a group of bulls were located in an adjacent field but not in the field where the man was located.
“Subsequent indications are that while the man may have been startled by the bulls he was not attacked by them.
“A post-mortem examination will be taking place to establish a cause of death.”
The landlord of the Dog In The Lane today said he knew nothing about the incident. Locals drinking there also said they had not seen the incident and were not aware what had happened.
Mrs Linda Hawley, who owns the Wendover Cattery in Astley, said: “I saw the ambulance go and thought that perhaps there had been an accident and that was all I heard yesterday, but a friend of mine told me this morning.”
