Villagers vow to fight closure plan

Villagers have vowed to fight plans to close their post office. More than 120 people in Hadnall met yesterday to discuss how to battle the proposed closure.

The branch is one of more than 25 in Shropshire under threat as pa- rt of a nationwide review of the postal network.

It is earmarked for replacement by an outreach service.

Hadnall Parish Council chairman Roy Tonge said the service was vital in a growing village like Hadnall.

At a packed meeting in the village hall, he urged villagers to write to Post Office with their reasons as to why it should not be replaced.

“We are a growth village and we have to control that growth or we will end up as a suburb,” he said.

“The village needs you in this campaign; it needs your support.”

It was agreed to form an action group against the plans, with a meeting scheduled for next week.

Parish councillor Brian Thomas said the nearest alternative branches were at Harlescott in Shrewsbury, Clive or Shawbury, all at least three miles away and with limited access by public transport.

Fellow councillor Dewi Davies said nearly 40 businesses in and around Hadnall would be affected by the closure.

County Council rural policy manager Clare Greener advised people to write to Post Office, giving reasons why the branch should be saved.

Speaking afterwards, Hadnall sub-postmaster Harmesh Jassel said he feared if the branch closed, the rest of his business, which includes a news- agent’s, off licence and dry cleaners, might suffer.
