Second ‘is least our fans deserve’

Rob SmithAFC Telford United complete the regular Blue Square North season at Burscough tomorrow, with boss Rob Smith urging his side: “Win it for the supporters.”Victory would seal a second place finish for the Bucks as they countdown to the start of the play-offs on Wednesday.

Smith believes that would be a deserved prize for the fans, who have followed the club all over the north of England this season.

“When the fans come out in force we react to it and the fact that we look like coming second with what is basically a new team says a lot about the support we’ve had behind us,” declared Smith.

“In the last two games (against Harrogate and Stalybridge) they’ve really driven us on and played a big part in us getting to the play-offs. It will be nice after the game tomorrow to be able to go over and thank them for their support.”

Smith insists his thoughts are fully focused on winning tomorrow’s game rather than worrying too much about what is to come.

And he will not be getting updates on what is happening in the games involving potential play-off opponents Stalybridge, Southport, Barrow and Harrogate.

“I don’t think we can go into it thinking too much about Wednesday,” said Smith. “We’ll just approach it in the same way that we normally do.

“Burscough have a lot of players out through suspension and injury, so they’re not without their problems, and we’ll be looking to get the job done quickly.”

Smith will start with right wing-back Lee Vaughan tomorrow, even though one more booking would see him suspended for the play-offs - but will have young Elliott Durrell on the bench to come on at the first sign of trouble.

Defender Asa Charlton is in a similar boat to Vaughan, and will be left out of the 16-man squad altogether in order to protect him.

Midfielder Emeka Nwadike has shrugged off a back injury and will take his place while centre-back Stuart Whitehead will start as he steps up his return from an ankle injury.
