Firefighters spent nearly three hours tackling a house fire which caused the main Welshpool to Oswestry road to be closed. Diversions were put in place as crews worked. The fire was coming through the roof of the property at Four Crosses.
A Mid and West Wales Fire Service spokesman said everyone was out of the house by the time crews arrived following the call at 6.15pm yesterday. The fire is believed to have been started accidentally.
The spokesman said: “We had to send three main appliances and two special appliances, as well as an aerial tower from Shropshire to tackle the blaze, which was coming through the roof of the house.
“A water tower was also brought in to assist in the operation and the service had three main hoses on the home at one time.
“It is not yet known how the fire was started, but we don’t think it was anything untoward. We are treating it as accidental ignition.”
The fire was out by 9pm, although the spokesman said a crew returned at 7am today to continue damping down.
He said a structural engineer had also been called today to assess the extent of the damage.
One neighbour said: “It looked pretty bad at the time, but luckily the services had it under control quite quickly. It is a terrible shame though.”
A Powys County Council spokesman said: “We were asked by the police to close the road through Four Crosses following a serious domestic fire.
“Traffic was diverted from Llanymynech through Llansantffraid to Welshpool, but the road was reopened to the public just after 11.30pm.”
