Langmead to miss season’s end

Kelvin LangmeadKelvin Langmead looks set to miss the final two games of the season as Shrewsbury manager Paul Simpson resists the temptation to rush the defender back.A League Two ever-present up until late March, the 23-year-old has been sidelined for almost a month with a niggling knee injury.

Langmead suffered a further setback in training on Friday and, despite the injury not thought to be serious, Simpson is preparing to write him out of his plans for Saturday’s derby with Chester and the final day trip to Rochdale.

“Kelvin has worked really hard with the medical staff to get himself to a level where he felt he could come in to train,” said the Town boss.

“He trained with us last Friday but came off at the end with a lot of soreness.

“I’ve had a chat with the medical staff and we decided because of the situation we are now in, we can’t take any chances with Kelvin and there’s no point risking him.

“I’m going to leave Kelvin out - it’s not the case that he’s got such a bad injury that he won’t be available again this season.

“It’s the case we want to get to the bottom of it and we don’t want to take any risks.

“He is the type of player who wants to play on even though it’s hurting but my main thing is that I want Kelvin Langmead to be fit for the start of pre-season.

“We have two games left that I want to win and do properly, but I won’t risk any players to achieve that and certainly won’t risk Kelvin.”

Meanwhile, skipper Ben Davies could be back in line to challenge for a place against his former club Chester on Saturday.

Davies was forced out of Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at Mansfield just minutes before the kick-off after developing a back spasm in the warm-up.

Town reserves are set for their second game in three days tonight when they head to Walsall.

Amongst the notable first-teamers in action are Asa Hall, David Hunt and James Constable.

The full team is: Jasbir Singh, Aaron Gibson, Harry Hooman, Luke Jones, James Meredith, Michael Barnes, Asa Hall, David Hunt Jimmy Ryan, James Constable, Tom Moss.

not worth risking that knee by trying to get back too soon. knees take time and kelvin needs to get it right at his age and protect his long term future whether it’s with us or pastures new (or higher planes)
