Birch ruled out of Bucks play-offs

Gary BirchStriker Gary Birch will definitely play no part in AFC Telford United’s play-off promotion bid following a cartilage operation. The 26-year-old went under the knife yesterday afternoon and, with a minimum of three weeks rehabilitation now required, it means his season is officially over.

That is no surprise to boss Rob Smith, who had already been planning for the final few games without the former Walsall and Lincoln hitman.

But he is more concerned about the slow progress wing-back Simon Forsdick - who is now rated as a major doubt for both legs of the play-off semi-finals due to his knee injury.

“Birchy had his operation yesterday at 4pm,” Smith revealed.

“The surgeon said there was some damage to the medial ligaments as well and it was a case of getting in there, and whatever they found they were going to repair.

“He won’t play again this season and I think it’s very unlikely that Fozzie will play a part now, either.

“He’s making slow progress and I can’t see how, in any way, shape or form, he can be ready for next Wednesday (when the first leg is played).

Smith believes defender Indy Khela could be fit for the play-offs - though his lack of match practice is a concern.

Fellow centre-back Stuart Whitehead returned to action last Saturday, and Smith is hopeful he can now get back in the swing of things even though he is still a little sore.

Midfielder Emeka Nwadike picked up a back injury during Saturday’s win at Stalybridge and he will be assessed .

Meanwhile, the race to join the Bucks in the play-offs continues tonight with Harrogate and Southport back in action.

Harrogate travel to Tamworth and Southport host bottom club Leigh RMI. Victories for both would knock in-form Barrow out of the play-off places going into the final round of games.
