The owner of a Shrewsbury town centre shop today thanked three road sweepers for their help in chasing down a thief who had run off with a bag containing £1,200.Murray Shanks, owner of The Little Gourmet, Castle Gates, said if the cleaners - Kevin Cleah, Glyn Jones and Brian Egby - had not got involved he would never have recovered his bag.
The thief had struck at 7.30am on Friday. He had asked for a hot drink and while Mr Shanks went to make it, he took the bag. Mr Shanks said: “I ran off down the road after him shouting all the time that he’d got my bag. A road cleaner ran out with his broom to try to knock him off his bike.
“We got down to by Chester Street and he was getting away so I ran into the road and stopped a car and asked him to go after the bike.
“We followed him but halfway up the hill the road cleaners’ wagon - a little yellow truck - pulled up in front of him and managed to cut him off. He disappeared down the Pig Trough half way up Coton Hill and the two sweepers got out and ran after him.
“He stopped at the barrier that’s a little way down there because he couldn’t get through with the bag. He dropped it and the road cleaners brought it back to me.
Anybody with information is asked to call police on 08457 444888.
