Larry Chambers today began AFC Telford’s countdown to their third play-off campaign in four years by declaring: “On our day we are a match for anybody.”The Bucks’ assistant manager was delighted after seeing his side book their place in the Blue Square North play-offs by coming from behind to win 2-1 at Stalybridge on Saturday.
An Asa Charlton free-kick four minutes from time, following up a stunning Jamie Vermiglio equaliser, ensured a second consecutive victory over a fellow promotion-chasing outfit.
“At the start of the season we just wanted to finish in the top 10,” said Chambers, whose side also beat potential play-off opponents Harrogate 3-1 last week.
“We passed that a long time ago and said we wanted to finish in the play-offs - and now we’re there.
“We don’t mind who we play now, and the only thing I would say is that I’d rather Barrow missed out as they’ve been on a great run.
“But the four teams below Kettering (the league champions) are all pretty evenly-matched and I think any of those four could win the play-offs.
“We have struggled against the top teams and, to be honest with you, in terms of quality those teams are probably better than we are.
“But we showed on Saturday that, on our day when everybody’s playing well, we’re a match for anybody.
“It will be a massive bonus now if we can finish second or third (and therefore get the second leg of their play-off semi-final at home).”
Chambers has been pleased by the way his side have responded in the last two weeks after a run of four straight defeats that threatened to ruin their promotion challenge.
“It was so disappointing to lose four on the trot and last week’s win was a tremendous filip for everybody at the club,” he added.
“The plan was to carry it on on Saturday and, while I don’t think we were good in the first half we showed in the second half what we are all about.”
