Revamp scheme to start

A multi-million pound refurbishment scheme to transform Madeley in Telford could be launched in just over three weeks, council bosses said today.

It is hoped the bulldozers will move in to demolish parts of the centre on May 12.

The former Co-Op store will be the first building to go, to make way for six retail units with flats above them.

A link road will also be created in the first phase along with a library entrance and a car park on the site of the old industrial unit.

Councillor David Wright, Madeley ward member, said: “The people of Madeley have been waiting a long time for this work to begin but this borough town is now firmly on the map with works due to start, subject to confirmation, as early as Monday, May 12.”

Phase two and three will see a new shopping precinct, work at Anstice and Russell Squares and a new Tesco store.

At long last this is going to happen. Andy Eade will take credit along with Jill Green but it was Labour Cllrs who started it all! The Star will not say this though!
