Woman dies in taxi tragedy

A Shropshire woman died after being hit by a taxi while on a Spanish island with her husband.

Elizabeth Warren died in hospital five days after she was struck by the vehicle while she crossed a road in Playa de las Americas in Tenerife. She was 66.

Today her husband Ivan, from Shrewsbury, praised hospital staff for trying to save his wife, describing the care she received as “absolutely superb”.

Mr Warren, 68, said: “We were on holiday in Tenerife and my wife had gone for a walk while I stayed in the hotel reading.

“We were due to meet up for a meal but Elizabeth was struck by a taxi on a pedestrian crossing at about 5.45pm on April 6. She died from head injuries on April 11.”

Mr Warren paid tribute to his “caring” wife, who worked as a nurse at the town’s former Royal Salop Infirmary.

Mr Warren said: “She was a very caring person. If she met somebody and they said it was their birthday or anniversary, even if she didn’t know them very well she would make or buy a card to give to them.”

Mrs Warren, whose organs were donated for transplant, leaves a son Andrew who is a nurse at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, daughter Julia, and five grandchildren.

Mrs Warren was born in Leeds in 1941, spending her young life in Tipton and training as a State Registered Nurse in Dudley.

She later worked at the Royal Salop Infirmary as a nurse before moving with her husband and young family to Penegoes in Montgomeryshire where they founded Warren Parc Caravan Parc.

Mrs Warren was also involved in the Inner Wheel and was Mayoress of Machynlleth twice in 1983 to 1984 and in 1993 to 1994 when her husband was a councillor.

She also organised the creation of the Machynlleth Charter Tapestry, which is now displayed in the town library. Mrs Warren and her husband also worked hard to save Machynlleth Hospital building and founded the successful Machynlleth Care Centre.

The couple’s daughter took over the running of the family business allowing Mr and Mrs Warren to buy another home in Shrewsbury, where they became involved with the town’s Rotary Club and the Tidy Shrewsbury Group.
