Shrewsbury Town have been warned not rest on their laurels - despite all but securing their Football League future.Yesterday’s 3-0 derby victory over Wrexham ended the club’s 15-match winless streak and means, barring a footballing miracle, Town will be in League Two next season.
Shrewsbury are now nine points clear of safety with just three games remaining, and have a superior goal difference to second from bottom Mansfield, who they travel to next week.
But, despite almost certainly staving off any lingering threat of relegation, manager Paul Simpson insists the final trio of matches remain very significant for his side.
“It was a fight to get that first result and I’m sure it’s a relief for everyone now it has come,” he said.
“I said before yesterday that we had four really big games to come. That’s still the case and let’s finish the season on a high.
“We’re not safe yet mathematically but we’re nine points clear and we have a better goal difference than the other teams have. I’d like to think that means we are safe but I don’t want us to rest on our laurels.
“We are getting a different attitude now and I want us to be professional in the last three games.”
Simpson insisted his side were full value for their first victory since January 19 which ended the joint second longest run without a win in the club’s history.
“I thought the signs were beginning to show on Tuesday (at Morecambe) that the lads were beginning to understand what we want,” he added.
“I’m not going to say that all the problems have gone away because they haven’t - there are still things that need addressing and dealing with.
“But I’m delighted with the attitude, the performance and most importantly the result.
“We wanted to be on the front foot and be really aggressive and when Kevin McIntyre got the early goal, it gave everyone a lift and knocked the stuffing out of Wrexham.
“I thought our two midfielders (Darren Moss and McIntyre) were superb and they put in a hell of a lot of work.
“That’s the type of attitude I want to see - that players want to stay here and fight for their place.”
