A petition of 678 names has been handed over to the district council calling for a Ludlow street to be opened to ease traffic flow while a bridge is replaced.
Campaigners want Lower Corve Street, which is currently shut, to operate in a one-way direction when work to build a new Burway Bridge starts this month.
The last bridge collapsed after severe flooding last year and a one-way bailey bridge has been in operation ever since.
Campaigner Charles Smith, who presented the petition to South Shropshire District Council last night, said people living on the north side of Ludlow would not queue in long traffic jams that “are bound to occur” at the East Hamlet/Old Raven Road junction.
He suggested many people would turn to Craven Arms or Leominster to shop and said taxi drivers, the Park and Ride and other bus services would be hit.
He also claimed five businesses had suggested they might have to make workers redundant or close, which could mean 37 jobs were lost.
Mr Smith said: “There is no good reason for keeping Lower Corve Street closed.”
The council will pass on the petition to Shropshire County Council.
A petition of 340 names was also presented by town councillor Derek Davies, to keep the Broad Gate open.
