‘Please pitch in’ is county plea

cricket-ball3.jpgCalling all Shropshire cricket clubs - your county needs you! Shropshire chairman of selectors Trevor Sheperd is looking for a club to lend their ground to the county side on Sunday, April 20.

The Minor Counties men are planning to stage an internal squad practice game, but have so far drawn a blank in their search for a venue.

The game would be a vital warm-up to their season opener, at home to Oxfordshire in the MCCA Trophy, a week later.

“All the people we’ve approached have already got games on their pitches,” Sheperd revealed. “We’re looking for a club that would be able to lend us a pitch on the edge of their square from 1.30pm until 7pm.”

Anyone who can help can contact Sheperd on 07815-836612.

Unbelievable!!! Are the County Club really asking for the Clubs to muck in and let them use a ground when the only big fund raiser of the season they have just given to Wrekin College instead of one of the County Clubs which supply them with the players in the first place?! Surely after Shifnal (06), Wellington (07), it was the turn of say Whitchurch, Bridgnorth, St Georges or Shrewsbury - instead they take it to Wrekin College and all join together with the ‘old school tie’!!!!!

The above is a justifed comment. Its a kick in the teeth for the local clubs with the game not being at a Shropshire Club. Trevor Sheperd should just give Wrekin College a ring.

Trevor Shepherd - looking for a favour from Shropshire clubs!!! Its the best laugh i’ve had for weeks. Well done Trev, keep up the bad work!!!

Maybe Trev should give Telford and Wrekin Council a ring and ask to borrow the astro turf wicket at the Bowring Park in Wellington.

Richard - Great idea, after all it would be a more fitting location for that standard of cricket. The reason ‘Trev’ wont be able to get a decent ground from one of the top clubs in the county is that they all play higher quality cricket than Shropshire and would therefore not want to risk early season damage to their pitches for second rate cricket that nobody is interested in and is now played by ‘has beens’ who have failed at the higher level.

Can’t believe that everyone seems to agree on this topic!! Amazing to think that Trevor Shepherd is looking for a Shropshire Club after all the clubs he has had in the last 3 decades!! Is there anybody he hasn’t been too?

Why would Cricket Clubs want to help Shropshire County Cricket Club? The County Club never does anything for the clubs in return - a classic example is the showpiece occasion this season being hosted at Wrekin college. How many players will Wrekin College have this year in the Shropshire Minor Counties team?

I fully understand all the resntment coming out from the club scene - I think this stems from a variety of reasons, none moreso than the fact that unfortunately the Committee of the County CLub tend to give off a very poor impression to the supporters on the whole.

The big question is does shropshire have a ground worthy of such a game? They arn’t exactly queueing up. Heard the news that Guy Bulpitt has signed for Shifnal. He’ll fit in well.

    FAO The Zog

Last season the following players represented Shropshire:
    Ed Foster-23
    Rob Foster-20
    Jack Shantry-20
    Steve Taylor-22
    Jimmy Taylor-18
    Dan Redfern-18
    Asif Sultan-20

Jimmy Taylor, Ed Foster and Dan Redfern are all First-Class cricketers. The others have all had interest from First-Class counties. Are you sure it is played by ’second rate has-beens’? Out of interest who do you play for?

Not too sure Birmingham Premier League is a better standard than Minor Counties, either.

FAO TenchMaster - Ive played first class fixtures, minor counties fixtures and birmingham premier league fixtures - Not a bad set of qualifications to back up any comments - How about you ????
