A police watchdog today said it had decided not to investigate the death of a Shrewsbury woman whose body was pulled out of the River Severn just hours after she was arrested.
West Mercia police referred the matter to the Independent Police Complaints Commission who reviewed the evidence but decided no action needed to be taken.
The body of Rachael Louise Jones, 22, of Springfield, Shrewsbury, was recovered from the River Severn on Monday.
It has been revealed Miss Jones had been arrested and taken into police custody on Sunday, before being released that evening without charge.
IPCC spokesman Ian Christon said: “The incident was referred to us on Monday but we assessed all the evidence and decided there was no concerns regarding the police handling of the matter so we have handed it back to the police force to continue their own investigation.”
Rachel Anstee, West Mercia Police spokesman, said: “It’s staying with the force so it’s our own investigation into the circumstances of what has happened.”

I relation to the final paragraph; Miss Jones was ‘detained’ by police for her own safety on the Sunday - there could never have been any ‘charge’ attached to her presence in police custody. Goodbye Rachael, hopefully you’re at peace now.
