Food recycling centre to open

The first food waste processing plant in Mid Wales will be officially opened in Newtown tomorrow.

Cwm Harry Land Trust will operate the plant.

Cwm Harry spokesman Adam Kennerley said food waste was the hardest part of the domestic black rubbish bag to collect, but once extracted it contained energy and nutrients, which had previously gone to waste.

It also made the rest of the bag “far easier to recycle”.

“Cwm Harry has been collecting this valuable resource from Newtown for 18 months,” he said. “Now it intends to process it in Wales and keep the benefits in Wales.”

Montgomeryshire MP Lembit Opik will open the new plant at the Vastre Enterprise Park, Newtown, at 9.30am.

The new processing plant is the first of its kind in Wales.

Mr Kennerley said: “We are immensely proud to see the opening of this facility.”
