A woman believed to have jumped from a bridge into the River Severn in Shrewsbury was released from police custody just hours beforehand.
Rachael Louise Jones was seen falling from the Telford Way bridge on Sunday.
On Monday a body was recovered from the river just a few hundred yards away from the bridge.
Although the body had not been formally identified the search for Miss Jones was called off.
Today it emerged the 22-year-old, of Springfield, had been arrested and taken into police custody on Sunday, before being released that evening without charge.
Police today refused to give any more details about the nature of the arrest.
In a statement a spokeswoman for West Mercia Police said: “Police received a call on Sunday evening and attended an address in Shrewsbury.
“A woman was arrested and taken into police custody. She was released later the same evening without charge. We are not prepared to give any more details about what the woman was arrested for.”
The statement added: “The inquiry into missing woman Rachael Jones is ongoing and the post mortem and formal ID of a woman found in the river is due to take place today.”
Police today said a man who tried to restrain Miss Jones had been traced and spoken to.
