Police searching for a missing Shrewsbury woman have recovered a body from the River Severn, just hundreds of yards from where she was last seen.
Emergency services had been searching for Rachael Louise Jones since Sunday night after the 22-year-old was seen falling into the water.
It is believed that the woman, from Springfield, jumped into the River Severn from the town’s Telford Way bridge after climbing over barriers.
Police yesterday said a man attempted to restrain Miss Jones to stop her jumping as she stood on the wrong side of the barriers of the bridge.
Miss Jones was seen falling into the water and disappeared from view almost immediately, they said.
Today police said a woman’s body had been found yesterday afternoon, and although it has not been formally identified the search for Miss Jones has been called off.
Police spokesman Richard Ewels said the body was retrieved from the river several hundred yards downstream from the Telford Way bridge, by members of the Severn Area Rescue Association, who used their boat to drag the river.
Officers launched the search for the woman just before 11pm on Sunday but nothing was found.
They resumed the hunt at first light yesterday and carried out an extensive search throughout the day.
Acting Chief Inspector Jason Wells said the search involved officers on foot, the boat team and the force helicopter, while the fire service was also involved.
A post mortem examination will now be carried out before the opening of an inquest.
